Special Jury Mention for “La Noira” by Carlos Baena
Last Tuesday night, the awards for the Best Animated Short were presented within the XIV Edition of the Sardinia Film Festival. Now in its fifth edition, Bosa Animation Awards confirms itself as an essential appointment in the Sardinian cultural panorama, with an excellent participation from the public.
The jury – composed by the producer Cristian Jezdic; the coordinator and didactic director of the animation courses of the Experimental Center of Cinematographic Piedmont Chiara Magri; and the critic, essayist and screenwriter Luca Raffaelli – has presented the award for the best animated short film to “Mercurio“ , by Michele Bernardi. The film “tells how a child’s great passion needs a free world in order to express itself. And it does so with scenes full of elegance and emotion”.
Mercury is a young boy who loves cycling. One day he is stopped by the fascist regime and locked up in a sorting camp, ready to be sent to a concentration camp. Forced to become a man quickly, he will try, with his unarmed struggle, to win against the horror of the Fascism and to gain an absolute freedom. The jury was keen to emphasize the high level of poetry in the animation of this work.
In addition, a special mention was given to the film “La Noira“, by Carlos Baena, with the following motivation: “What is fear? Is it possible to feel it as a useful emotion, which can save our lives? This spectacular film puts us on a panoramic wheel – as it is mentioned in the title – to push us to overcome the fears that block us, projecting us towards the quiet vortex of life “.
